Solid Surface Heat Damage Repair Across Surrey, Hampshire & Berkshire
A hot pan set down without a trivet, a baking tray straight from the oven, a heat gun held too close during another job nearby — any of these can leave a scorched, yellowed, or blistered mark on a Corian worktop. It looks alarming, particularly when the discolouration is dark or the surface has bubbled slightly. It is very rarely as serious as it looks.
Corian is an acrylic-based solid surface, and sustained heat above its thermal threshold damages the resin at a molecular level, discolouring it. Because the material is homogeneous all the way through, that discolouration sits within the surface layer rather than on top of it — there is no coating or veneer that has been destroyed. In our experience carrying out solid surface repair across Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire, we have not encountered a Corian burn severe enough to require material removal. Every case has responded to abrasive treatment.
Why Corian Burns — And Why It Can Be Abraded Away
Corian's acrylic resin has a defined thermal threshold. Below it, the material tolerates normal kitchen use without issue. Above it — direct contact with a pan straight off the hob, a hot oven tray, or a heat gun — the resin discolours, typically yellowing or browning, and in more severe cases blistering slightly at the surface.
Because the colour and composition of Corian run consistently through the full thickness of the sheet, this discolouration does not go "into" the material in the way a stain soaks into timber or stone. It sits within the upper layers of the surface, and the same progressive abrasive sequence we use for scratch removal and polishing is sufficient to remove it entirely, without needing to rout out or replace any material.
Our Burn & Scorch Repair Process
Stage 1: Assessment
We assess the depth and extent of the discolouration before starting. A single light scorch mark from a pan base is treated differently to a wider, more heavily browned area from prolonged heat gun contact — the starting grit and the size of the treated zone both depend on this.
Stage 2: Light Surface Scorching
For light scorching — the most common presentation, typically a pan-shaped mark or light yellowing — we work the affected area using our Mirka DEROS random orbital sander with Mirka Abranet ceramic mesh abrasives, starting around 120 grit and progressing through 180, 240, 320, and 400 grit. Each stage removes the scratch pattern left by the one before it, taking the discolouration out progressively rather than in one aggressive pass. Starting too coarse on light scorching creates more finishing work than the damage warrants, so we match the starting grit to what the mark actually needs.
Stage 3: Deeper or More Severe Burns
Where the burn is deeper — heavier browning, visible surface blistering, or a wider affected area — we start the sequence at 80 grit, the coarsest abrasive we use on Corian, and work through the full progressive Abranet sequence: 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, and 400 grit. This removes more material to get beneath the full depth of the discolouration before the finer grits bring the surface back to a consistent finish.
Every stage, on every burn repair, is carried out with our Makita VC4210M M-Class dust extractor connected directly to the sander, capturing composite acrylic dust at the tool head throughout.
Stage 4: Abralon Finishing
Once the discolouration is fully abraded out, we finish with Mirka Abralon pads to bring the treated area back to a consistent satin sheen matching the surrounding surface.
Stage 5: Feathering the Repair
As with scratch removal, a localised burn repair on a worktop that has seen years of daily use will look slightly newer than the surrounding surface immediately after treatment, simply because the rest of the worktop carries accumulated micro-scratching that a freshly abraded patch will not yet show. We feather the treated zone out into the surrounding surface to minimise that contrast as much as possible.
Single Marks vs Multiple Heat Marks
A single, isolated burn mark — a pan set down once in the wrong place — is usually the most straightforward repair we do on Corian, often completed within an hour or two depending on severity.
Worktops with multiple heat marks, typically clustered around a hob or a spot where hot pans are regularly set down without a trivet, need a broader assessment. Treating each mark as an individual isolated patch on a worktop with several marks nearby often makes the contrast between treated and untreated areas more obvious, not less. In these cases we will usually recommend extending the treated zone to cover the whole affected run, or in some cases a full surface polish across the worktop, so the finish is consistent rather than patchy. We will always explain which approach suits your worktop before starting.
An Honest Note on Results
In our experience, Corian burn and scorch marks are never severe enough to need material removal or a routed repair — the abrasive sequence has been sufficient in every case we have carried out. That said, on a worktop with a single mark surrounded by otherwise heavily worn, micro-scratched surface, the treated patch will look newer than its surroundings immediately after the repair, even though the discolouration itself is fully gone. Where multiple marks are present, or where the surrounding surface is heavily worn, a wider treatment area or full surface polish will usually give a better result than a series of small isolated patches. We will always assess your worktop honestly and tell you which approach makes sense before any work begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can all Corian burns be repaired, or is some heat damage too severe?
In our experience, yes — every Corian burn we have treated has responded fully to the progressive Mirka abrasive sequence, without needing material removal or a routed repair. The variable is not whether it can be repaired, but how large an area needs treating to leave a consistent finish.
Will the burn mark come back?
No, provided the underlying cause is avoided going forward. The discolouration itself is fully removed by the abrasive process. To prevent recurrence, always use a trivet or heat pad under hot pans and trays, and keep heat guns and other heat sources well clear of the surface during other work in the kitchen.
Do you need to remove or rout out the burnt material?
No. Unlike a crack repair, burn and scorch damage does not require routing or an inserted repair piece. The discolouration sits within the upper surface layers and is removed entirely through abrasion.
How long does a burn repair take?
A single, isolated burn mark typically takes an hour or two. Where there are multiple marks, or where we recommend extending treatment across a wider area or the full worktop, it will take longer — we will give you a clear time estimate once we have assessed the damage.
My worktop has several heat marks near the hob — should each one be treated separately?
Not usually. Treating several nearby marks as individual patches tends to leave a patchy, inconsistent finish. We will generally recommend treating the whole affected run, or in some cases the full worktop, so the finish is even throughout.

Aftercare: Preventing Further Heat Damage
What to do:
Always use a trivet or heat pad under pans, baking trays, and slow cookers, even for a short time. Clean daily with a mild, pH-neutral surface cleaner and a soft cloth — a cream cleaner such as Corian-approved Handy Andy applied in a circular motion is suitable for routine maintenance.
What to avoid:
Never place hot pans, trays, or dishes straight from the oven or hob directly onto the surface. Keep heat guns and other heat sources well away from the worktop during other work in the kitchen, even if the worktop is not the surface being worked on. Avoid abrasive scouring pads and household cutting compounds such as T-Cut, which will scratch and dull the surface unevenly rather than restoring it.
