Quartz Worktop Repair Services
A chipped quartz worktop is one of the most common reasons homeowners are quoted for a full replacement — and one of the most unnecessary. Quartz is an engineered material, bonded from crushed natural quartz and resin under pressure, and that construction means damage sits within a repairable surface rather than a structural write-off. In the vast majority of cases we see across Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire, a quartz worktop with a chip, crack, or impact mark can be restored on-site to a finish that is flat, colour-matched, and difficult to spot once it has cured and been polished.
We have carried out worktop repair work for 20 years, and quartz is one of the materials where the gap between "what a kitchen fitter will tell you" and "what is actually achievable" is widest. Quartz cannot be re-melted or heat-repaired like solid surface, and it cannot be sanded back in the same way as timber — but it can be filled, colour-matched, and polished using the correct resin system and the right sequence. Get any part of that sequence wrong and the repair is obvious. Get it right and it is not.
Why Quartz Damages the Way It Does
Quartz worktops are manufactured from roughly 90–95% crushed natural quartz bound with polyester or acrylic resin, then cured under heat and pressure into a dense, hard slab. That density is what makes quartz resistant to everyday wear — but it also makes it brittle under sharp, concentrated impact. A dropped pan corner, a heavy tin dropped edge-first, or stress around a poorly supported sink cutout will chip or crack the surface rather than dent it, because the material has very little give.
Cracks in quartz are almost always caused by one of two things: impact stress concentrated at a weak point such as a cutout corner, or inadequate support beneath the slab allowing flex under weight. Chips are typically impact damage to an edge, corner, or cutout lip, where the material has the least surrounding mass to absorb a knock.
Because quartz is engineered rather than a single homogeneous mineral like solid surface, colour and pattern matching for a repair has to be done manually on-site rather than sourced from an off-cut. This is the single biggest factor separating a repair that disappears from one that does not.
Our Quartz Repair Process
Stage 1: Assessment and Preparation
We start by assessing the depth, location, and cause of the damage. Cracks around cutouts are checked for underlying support issues before any filling begins — filling a crack without addressing a flex or support problem underneath it means the repair will open again. The damaged area is cleaned out and any loose or unstable material at the edges of the chip or crack is removed back to sound, solid quartz.
Stage 2: Resin Filling with Tenax Vinyl Ester
We use Tenax Vinyl Ester resin as the sole filling product for quartz repair — there is no separate bulk filler stage. On deeper chips and cracks, the resin is built up in 2–3 layered applications rather than a single pour. Layering reduces shrinkage as the resin cures and significantly lowers the risk of the fill cracking or pulling away from the edges of the repair, which is the most common cause of a failed quartz repair.
Stage 3: Manual Colour Matching
Before the final layer is applied, the resin is tinted on-site using solvent-based acrylic tints, mixed by hand against the surrounding quartz pattern. Quartz slabs vary in fleck density, background colour, and pattern distribution even within the same product range, so colour matching is done by eye against your specific worktop rather than against a manufacturer's reference sample. This stage is where experience matters most — an inexperienced match will be close in colour but wrong in fleck density, which is often more visible than a colour mismatch.
Stage 4: Curing
The resin is left to cure fully before any levelling work begins. Cure time depends on the depth of the repair and the ambient temperature in the kitchen, and we will confirm the schedule when we assess the job. Working the repair before it has properly cured risks pulling the fill and undoing the bond.
Stage 5: Levelling with Razor Profiling
Once cured, the repair is brought level with the surrounding surface using sharp razor blades — a technique known as level-shaving. This removes the excess cured resin from the top of the fill in fine, controlled passes rather than grinding it back, which keeps the surrounding polished surface undisturbed and avoids introducing dishing or a low spot at the repair.
Stage 6: Progressive Polishing with Tungsten Carbide Discs
The final stage brings the repair back to the same finish as the surrounding quartz using tungsten carbide polishing discs, progressing through the full sequence from 80 grit up to 5000 grit. Each stage refines the surface further, working out the scratch pattern left by the previous grit, until the repair zone matches the mirror or satin sheen of the rest of the worktop. Quartz and stone repairs use an almost identical process at this stage — the polishing sequence does not meaningfully differ between the two materials.
An Honest Note on Quartz Repair Results
A correctly executed quartz repair, colour-matched and polished through the full sequence, is very difficult to identify under normal kitchen lighting once complete. That said, we will not tell you a repair is guaranteed invisible before we have seen the damage and the surrounding pattern in person. Heavily patterned, high-movement quartz designs are more forgiving of a repair than plain, uniform colours, where any variation in fleck density is more noticeable.
Where a crack has been caused by a support or flex issue beneath the worktop, we will always raise this before starting the resin work — filling the crack without addressing the cause means it is likely to reopen. We will tell you honestly what is achievable, and what is not, before any work begins.
